After the mine

More than any other cultural landscapes, opencast mine sites are subject to permanent change that continues for decades, even after industrial activity has ceased. The opencast mine at Welzow-Süd numbers among the last active mines in the Lausitz region.
For landscape architects it seems almost paradisiacal. Where else might one design a landscape on this scale? Yet, what use is landscape design to a region's inhabitants, if they don't identify with its aesthetics? Post-industrial design of the opencast mine at Welzow-Süd is based on developing new types of land-usage and regional value chains in cooperation with local players, and integrating them in concrete landscape scenarios and concepts.
