The circa 50 hectare “Spree Campus” on the banks of the river Spree in Berlin-Siemensstadt is a typical walled-in factory site, whose clock-tower and branch canal bear witness to an industrial past. Siemensstadt is currently undergoing radical transformation. The company out-sources production to global locations whilst former production sites in Germany fall into disuse or are converted for other purposes.
In cooperation with Unverzagt. Visuelle Kommunikation and cet-0, Urban Catalyst studio developed a small-step strategy for the Spree Campus. Creative and programmatic phased interventions were combined with a new system of orientation and development to generate the site’s specific profile as a modern service location. The concept is based on a dynamically phased model that can respond flexibly to changing conditions yet nonetheless assures a viable basic framework. The advantages for site management and project development are obvious: an active role can be undertaken even in an economically stagnant market, without having to wait for times to get better.
